Police rescue woman locked up by in-laws

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia - The National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) has commended the Jeddah police for their quick response to help a young woman imprisoned in her house by her father-in-law. “Unjustified restriction of the freedom of anyone is a crime to be punished by law. It is against Shariah being applied in the Kingdom,” member of the society Maatouk Al-Sharif told Arab News. He said in addition to her imprisonment, the woman was beaten by her brother-in-law. She suffered bruises that required five days of treatment, according to a medical report. The Jeddah police said it was a family dispute. They intervened after the woman called them, saying that her father-in-law locked her up so as to sell her jewelry to settle the debts of her husband. The NSHR assigned two lawyers, Yassir Al-Khawwajah and Ahmad Mattar, to provide the woman with legal support. The society had earlier intervened to free four young girls that were locked up by their own father. The girls, the oldest of them being 25, were handed over to their uncle on their request.
